Unlimited Center of Art: A Harmonious Blend of Art and Life

Zhao Shu's Design Transforms a Community Space into an Artistic Sanctuary

In a world where art and life often exist in separate realms, Zhao Shu's Unlimited Center of Art is a breath of fresh air. This innovative design intertwines art with everyday life, creating a space that is not only functional but also deeply inspiring. The center, located in Hebei, China, serves as both a community entrance and an art center, blurring the lines between the mundane and the extraordinary.

The inspiration behind the Unlimited Center of Art is the concept of an "artistic church," a space born for light and art. Zhao Shu believes that art has the power to inspire people and help them focus on their inner world. This belief is reflected in every aspect of the design, from the placement of the artworks to the use of natural light. The center is designed to be a place where there are no classes or differences in the view of art, where all topics and activities revolve around art, breaking down all boundaries.

What sets the Unlimited Center of Art apart is its unique use of space and light. Upon entering the venue, visitors find that artworks are placed at the most central position of the space. The holistic space looks natural, and natural light endows the space a spiritual power. This design decision reflects Zhao Shu's philosophy: "Let the light in where it is needed. With the changes of twenty-four solar terms in four seasons, every moment is new."

The center is also notable for its commitment to environmental sustainability. The main material used in the construction is algae clay, an environment-friendly and low-carbon material. The design team also made a conscious effort to utilize natural daylight to illuminate the space and artworks. The whole building features a steel structure, which is recycled and reused.

Despite the challenges of controlling natural daylight in an interior space that functions as an art display space, Zhao Shu and his team were able to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. They decreased the size of openings in the building skin to create a dark chamber-like space inside, and daylight is introduced into the areas of the main permanent artworks.

The Unlimited Center of Art is more than just a space; it is a testament to the power of art to transform lives and spaces. It is a place where art and life intersect, creating a unique experience for all who enter. As Zhao Shu puts it, "Art fits into life" was the main demand of the client, who hoped that art would become a major part of future life. It could serve as a multi-functional art center that includes galleries, multi-functional exhibition halls, outdoor plazas, etc., to meet the daily needs of various art activities.

The Unlimited Center of Art is a testament to Zhao Shu's innovative design approach and his commitment to creating spaces that inspire and transform. It is no surprise that this design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is a testament to Zhao Shu's remarkable design skills and his ability to create spaces that are not only functional but also deeply inspiring.
